Massage Techniques

The secret of a good massage including techniques.

Massage is intuitive. The secret of a good massage is to create as much contact as possible, using the whole of your hand’s surface area, especially your palms. Your hands and wrists should be relaxed with your fingers together. Aim for rhythm, with slow movements.

Techniques

Effleurage

Long, slow, gliding strokes using the whole of your hand with fingers together. Start lightly and increase to desired pressure.

Friction

Deep massage with small, swift movements made by thumbs, fingers, knuckles or the heel of hands.

Petrissage

Deep, vigorous kneading and squeezing movement between fingers and thumb.

Acupressure

Using thumb pressure, or an elbow, into an area of muscle tension or pressure point.
