Baby name trends across Australia are fascinating to look into when thinking about a name for your little girl. Each state government lists popular baby name trends on the web. Following are some insights gained from the 2010 figures for girls.

Ruby has charged to the top, or near to it, of the ten most popular girls names everywhere except NT where it is at the bottom of the list. Only in VIC did it enjoy such a high position in 2009, in the other states it was at the low end of the top ten or not on it at all.

Chloe remains popular being in the top three in NSW, QLD and WA and mid way in ACT, SA, TAS and VIC. However it didn’t rank in the top ten in NT.

Mia is a name with variation in popularity across the states. It has remained in the top three, as it has for the previous year, in QLD and VIC. It didn’t rank in WA and is at the bottom of the ten in NT and ACT. It is midway in NSW, SA and TAS.

Likewise, Isabella is at the top of the charts in NSW and NT, forth in QLD, TAS and WA but towards the low end in SA and VIC.

Charlotte is widely popular. It is ranked second in SA, TAS and VIC and midway in NSW, NT and QLD. However, it is at the bottom of WA’s list.

Olivia more popular in NT. Although it is fourth in NSW and VIC and sixth in WA, it is at the end of the list in SA and has no rank in QLD.

The NT continues to set their own trends with Ava being high on the list, at equal third, where it does not rank anywhere else except in VIC in seventh place. Likewise with Hannah, also in third place in NT, it doesn’t rank anywhere else.

You probably will not know you are pregnant. If you are planning a pregnancy, a test may show positive in the third or fourth week at the earliest, depending on when you conceived. A test can detect a pregnancy usually 12 days after conception.

4-8 Weeks
It is advisable to see your doctor as soon as you know you are pregnant for routine tests and advice.

You are not legally obliged to tell your employer yet though if there are health and safety issues to consider in your work, there may be advantages in doing so.

Re-educate yourself with our extensive list of safe pregnancy tips compiled by our experts. Our comprehensive research includes advice on diet, exercise, natural therapies, drugs and medicines, the effects of social drugs, chemicals, vitamins and minerals, posture and illnesses.

8-12 Weeks

Speak to your doctor or health professional to organise your antenatal care.

Find out about antenatal testing, what it involves, and the benefits and possible risks. It is your decision. Make an informed one. For more information click here: antenatal testing.

Most doctors and medical professionals support an ultrasound scan at 12 weeks to confirm and date a pregnancy and again at 18-22 weeks to check the baby’s development.

How long since you’ve seen your dentist? Pregnancy hormones soften your gums and make them vulnerable to bleeding and infection. Research shows that premature birth may be linked with gum disease

Choose a pregnancy-safe exercise programme and organise sessions. It has been proven that women who are fit have safer and more positive birth outcomes. Belly dancing? Yoga? Walking? Swimming? See what appeals to you most by browsing our Health & Fitness section.

Choose natural therapies to help maintain your wellbeing through the next seven months.

12-16 Weeks

You will probably have your first antenatal consultation between 12 and 14 weeks during which you will be asked about your family’s medical history. Make sure you know the relevant information. Make arrangements for further appointments if necessary.

Start planning your shopping list and expeditions. If you have a partner, include him in the decision-making. Organise buying the larger items mid-pregnancy to take the pressure off you in the latter stages. Make sure you are buying or borrowing items for your baby that are SIDS approved.

Prepare a blend of body oil to nourish your skin and help prevent stretch marks as follows:

80ml base oil (grapeseed or sweet almond oil)

Add 10 mls wheatgerm oil

10 mls avocado oil

5 mls vitamin E oil

5 drops neroli essential oil

5 drops mandarin essential oil

Massage gently into abdominal, hips, buttocks and breast area after bathing.

Start thinking about how and where you would like to give birth. If you intend having a home birth, start looking for a midwife. If you choose a hospital, you may wish to visit to see what is on offer. If you are considering a birthing centre, it pays to book early as these are popular and can be short on beds. Find out about antenatal classes for you and your partner.

Invest in an adjustable maternity bra.

16-20 Weeks
If you are considering renovating, arrange to have any jobs that may be harmful to your developing baby such as stripping paint, sanding or sealing, completed while you are staying elsewhere.

The second trimester is considered the safest time for air travel provided your pregnancy is not considered high risk. Persuade your partner or a friend to take a break with you to an international location. This may be your last chance for a while.

Include raspberry leaf tea in your day. Two cups will help prepare your body for the latter stages of pregnancy.

Invest in some comfortable clothing. Tight and restrictive garments will hinder circulation.

You may feel sensations in your abdomen as your baby moves about! This is called quickening and may be felt as early as 16 weeks but is more common around 20 weeks. Most women describe this first sensation as a magical moment. Involve your partner in some womb communication.

Find out about the importance of strengthening your pelvic floor muscles. Many women suffer from stress incontinence also known as involuntary urination. It has been proven that pelvic floor exercises help prevent this distressing problem.

It is important to allocate yourself some time for relaxation. Yoga, meditation or tai chi are perfect ways to relax and raise your energy at the same time.

Start practising deep, steady, rhythmic breathing. This will become a valuable skill during labour.

You may have your second ultrasound scan scheduled in the next few weeks. Do you want to know the sex of your baby? In preparing the nursery, make it a baby-friendly environment and check for possible hazards.

Pack away your high heels and practise positive posture. Consider what you would like to include on your birth plan. What’s important to you?

Adjust your fitness schedule and cut out high impact activity.

A reliable washing machine will help cut your workload after your baby is born. If you haven’t already got one, put it on your wishlist.

If you are leaking colostrum (and some women do as early as the second trimester!) invest in some breast pads.

24-28 Weeks

Need to arrange maternity leave?

Start cooking extra food to stock your freezer. Once you return home with your newborn, cooking dinner will be the last thing you’ll feel like doing. Prepare in advance.

Watch for signs of pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes. If detected early, these can be prevented from developing into more serious conditions. Signs of pre-eclampsia include raised blood pressure, protein in the urine, and swelling of your face, hands, and ankles. Signs of gestational diabetes include extreme thirst, frequent urination, and extreme tiredness.
Problems with circulation?

Afraid of developing varicose veins? A body massage will encourage venous blood flow back to the heart as well as soothing aching muscles. Tell your therapist that you are pregnant when booking an appointment. Put your feet up whenever you have an opportunity.

Rehearsal contractions known as Braxton Hicks may occur. These are useful to practice deep breathing in preparation for labour.

28-30 Weeks

If you plan to use natural birthing methods, make sure the facilities are available and book in early.

If your baby was born now, it could survive with special care. Don’t get caught short! Consider packing just in case.

Does your oven need cleaning? Persuade your partner, a friend or family member to do it for you. Avoid harsh chemicals and cleaning agents that may harm your baby.

Begin gathering items you may need at the labour. Most women say it’s important to pack personal items to make the delivery room feel homely. What to Pack

Feeling washed out? Home Beauty Spa is full of innovative ideas you can prepare yourself to chill out at home. Click here to read more.

If you are suffering from varicose veins or heavy legs, raise the end of your bed slightly encourage venous flow.

If you’ve got any energy left, prepare some meals for freezing. These will come in useful during the latter stages of pregnancy or in during the first few months of parenthood.

30-34 Weeks

Make sure you are organised in case you go into premature labour and need to go to hospital. Pack a bag containing essential items for you, your partner and the baby.

Buy some pure essential oil of jasmine. It has a rich aroma and has been valued for centuries in preparing the uterine muscles for labour and childbirth. Use one drop in a bath, or blend with a sweet almond or grapeseed base oil for abdominal massage.

It’s likely that your baby is active when you are trying to sleep. Abdominal massage just before bedtime can help encourage your baby to sleep too.

Avoid lifting and standing for long periods of time.

Book some reflexology sessions. It will stimulate your natural hormone production and prepare you for labour as well as grounding all thoughts, apprehensions and energy at the end a day.

34-40 Weeks

If you plan to bring your newborn home with you in a car, you are legally required to have an approved restraint for your baby. A capsule is the most common option and comes with a bolt to anchor it in your car. Make sure your car has the necessary anchor point. Recent car models have this facility.

Consider your energy levels and if you haven’t already, cut down on work.

The cut-off point for flying internationally is usually 36 weeks. This depends on the airline and whether or not your pregnancy is considered high risk. Medical professionals advise that air travel is safest during the second trimester. Domestic flights will accept you up until full term provided that you have not had any complications and that you are not carrying a multiple pregnancy. For more information view our Tips for Travelling

If you plan to use a birthing centre or have a hospital birth, work out the route and do a practice run.

Buy some Australian Bush Flower Emergency Essence for the labour. A combination of six essences, the Emergency Essence is recommended in times of stress, fear or panic. It is also useful after a difficult labour.

Decide who you wish to have present at the labour.
