Baby Showers

Baby showerTen years ago the only people who knew about the term ‘baby shower’ were Americans and American sitcom watchers. But the celebration has worked its way around the globe and has hit our shores will full velocity.

It’s really a chance to have a girly day or night with friends and family, for the mother-to-be “showered” with gifts and for women to cluck over babies. These presents were traditionally all for the baby but more recently presents also include pampering for the mother such as spa treatments, bottles of Champagne (for after the birth) and so on. In London hotels such as The Berkeley are doing special ‘baby shower packages’ which include a private suite for between 10 to 15 friends, decorated with Diptyque candles and posies of McQueen’s flowers, a delicious afternoon tea with pretty cupcakes and fondant fancies, baby-themed iced biscuits and tea sandwiches, complemented by coffee, tea, juices – and, of course, pink champagne, exclusive decorations and treats, from sparkly Swarovski table crystals to goodie boxes of Mama Mio baby treats, sourced at your request and lollipops and miniature hand-tied bouquets for guests when they leave. In Australia, The Baby Shower Shop (www.thebabyshowershop.com.au) is a one stop shop for everything you need when organising or going to a shower. This celebration is big business!

If the Berkeley is a little out the way then try emulating it at home – you could even hire a beauty therapist to come and pamper you and your guests. There are no fixed rules for a shower, you can have it wherever you like and do whatever you like. We probably wouldn’t recommend it but baby showers have been known to be held in bars and for a male stripper be a present! Whatever you fancy it should be a day that’s special for you.
